The Facts:

Recent polling data reveals a dramatic shift in American public opinion regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the war began following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks. Gallup’s annual tracking shows American sympathy for Israelis has fallen beneath 50% for the first time in nearly 25 years, driven largely by declining support among Democrats and independents. Approximately one-third of U.S. adults now express more sympathy for Palestinians, representing a significant change from historical trends where Americans consistently showed greater support for Israel.

The American Jewish Committee’s 2024 survey found that 70% of Jewish respondents believe Jews in the United States are less secure than a year earlier, with the Israel-Hamas war cited as the primary reason. Shockingly, 56% of Jewish Americans report modifying their behavior to avoid publicly identifying as Jewish due to safety concerns, up from 38% just three years ago. Pew Research data shows the percentage of Americans who perceive “a lot” of discrimination against Jews has doubled since 2021, while Gallup reports satisfaction with how Jewish people are treated has dropped from 50% to 42% - the largest decrease among all racial and ethnic groups surveyed.

Age has emerged as a significant dividing factor, with about 40% of adults under 30 believing the U.S. provides “too much” aid to Israel compared to one-third of adults overall. The AP-NORC poll from March found only about one-quarter of adults under 30 consider Israel a “close ally,” compared to half of those over 60. Meanwhile, concerns about discrimination against Muslims remain similarly high, though polling data for Muslim and Arab Americans is limited due to small sample sizes.

Opinion:

As someone deeply committed to democratic values, religious freedom, and America’s constitutional principles, these developments alarm me profoundly. The erosion of support for Israel - our most stable democratic ally in a volatile region - represents a dangerous departure from America’s historical commitment to supporting democracies against terrorist organizations like Hamas. While legitimate concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza must be addressed, abandoning our democratic partner entirely risks undermining regional stability and America’s strategic interests.

Most distressing is the dramatic increase in antisemitism within our own borders. The fact that Jewish Americans feel compelled to hide their identity out of fear is utterly antithetical to everything America stands for. Our Constitution guarantees religious freedom for all, and any community living in fear represents a failure of our society to uphold these fundamental rights. The horrific attack outside a synagogue in England that killed two people serves as a grim reminder that antisemitic violence knows no borders and requires vigilant opposition.

We must reject the false choice between supporting Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks and advocating for Palestinian civilians’ welfare. A truly pro-democracy, pro-human rights stance requires both: supporting Israel’s security needs while demanding protection for innocent lives in Gaza. The growing generational divide suggests we’re failing to educate younger Americans about Israel’s democratic character and the complex realities of the conflict.

America must recommit to combating antisemitism in all its forms while maintaining our strategic alliance with Israel. We cannot allow political disagreements about foreign policy to justify discrimination against Jewish Americans or undermine religious freedom. The safety of all religious minorities - Jewish, Muslim, Christian, or otherwise - must remain non-negotiable in our pluralistic democracy. Our nation’s strength has always derived from our ability to debate policies vigorously while protecting the rights and safety of all citizens equally.
