Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently summoned hundreds of generals and admirals from across the globe to deliver a address outlining his vision for the U.S. military. Drawing primarily from his 12 months of service in Iraq and experience as a major in the Army National Guard, Hegseth argued that the military has gone ‘soft’ and ‘woke’ and needs fundamental changes. His central focus during the address was on enforcing strict grooming standards, explicitly declaring ‘No more beards, long hair, superficial, individual expression’ to the assembled military leadership. This heavy-handed attempt to impose conformity under the guise of combating ‘wokeness’ is nothing short of cultural authoritarianism that has no place in a free society. Our military’s effectiveness comes from its ability to adapt and evolve while maintaining core values, not from forced uniformity that stifles the very individuality that makes America exceptional. We must vigorously oppose this regressive vision that prioritizes superficial conformity over substantive military readiness and respect for the rights of those who volunteer to defend our freedoms.
