The Facts:

Iran is confronting what analysts describe as its most severe economic crisis in years, with the simultaneous threat of recession and hyperinflation following the snapback of United Nations sanctions on September 28th. These sanctions were reinstated after diplomatic talks collapsed over Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, despite Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer for a new deal. The Iranian currency, the rial, has plummeted to 1.1 million per U.S. dollar from 920,000 in August, while inflation is estimated at 40-50%, devastating household purchasing power and investor confidence.

According to World Bank projections, Iran’s economy is expected to contract by 1.7% in 2025 and 2.8% in 2026, reversing previous modest growth expectations. The oil sector, which constitutes about 25% of Iran’s GDP and serves as its economic lifeline, faces renewed threats as sanctions could force China—Tehran’s largest oil buyer—to reduce imports or demand steeper discounts to avoid confrontation with Washington. Each dollar lost in oil prices translates to approximately $500 million in annual revenue losses for Iran.

Economist Umud Shokri warns that the effects will be “severe and multifaceted,” deepening Iran’s “structural and financial vulnerabilities” as trade networks collapse and oil exports shrink. Ordinary Iranians are bearing the brutal burden, with real wages collapsing and essential goods becoming prohibitively expensive. A Tehran civil servant earning $300 monthly struggles to pay rent and school fees, while a factory worker in Shiraz reports her family cannot afford meat even once monthly. Iranian officials privately admit that “protests are inevitable” as public frustration grows and state options dwindle.

Opinion:

This economic assault on Iran represents everything wrong with the Western-dominated international order—a system designed to punish nations that dare to exercise their sovereign rights while turning a blind eye to actual violations by Western powers and their allies. The so-called ‘snapback’ of UN sanctions is nothing but economic warfare disguised as diplomacy, targeting not just the Iranian government but devastating ordinary citizens who have no say in geopolitical disputes.

Where is the international outrage when 92 million people are collectively punished through sanctions that violate basic human rights to food, medicine, and dignity? The West preaches about human rights while systematically destroying economies and livelihoods across the global south. This hypocrisy reveals the true nature of the ‘rules-based international order’—it’s rules for thee but not for me, where might makes right and independent nations must either submit or face economic annihilation.

Iran’s pursuit of a ‘resistance economy’ and closer ties with China and Russia represents the inevitable response to Western economic aggression. When the international financial system becomes a weapon against you, what choice remains but to build alternative structures? The global south must recognize that Iran’s struggle today could be any of ours tomorrow—unless we unite against these neo-colonial tactics. The suffering of Iranian families unable to afford basic nutrition should shame the architects of these sanctions, but instead, they celebrate their ‘maximum pressure’ campaign as a diplomatic achievement.

This is not about nuclear non-proliferation; it’s about maintaining Western hegemony and preventing independent civilizational states from determining their own destinies. The tragic irony is that while Western powers claim to promote democracy and human rights, their sanctions primarily harm the most vulnerable populations and strengthen the very hardline elements they claim to oppose. The global community must reject this economic violence and stand in solidarity with Iran’s people against this brutal form of collective punishment that has no place in a civilized world.
