The Facts: What’s Happening with Election Monitoring

The Trump administration announced on Friday that the Justice Department will be monitoring polling sites in California and New Jersey ahead of the November 4 election. This action comes amid requests from Republican Party officials in those states, though election monitoring by the Justice Department itself is not historically uncommon. However, this particular deployment occurs against a deeply concerning backdrop. President Trump has consistently pushed the Justice Department to pursue aspects of his political agenda, including targeting his political opponents, which has significantly eroded the department’s traditional independence and non-partisan nature.

The context of this monitoring is particularly troubling given President Trump’s baseless claims about the 2020 election being rigged, despite overwhelming evidence showing no widespread voter fraud. While voter fraud remains exceedingly rare in American elections, Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly claimed it is rampant, particularly targeting mail-in voting - the primary method by which most Californians cast their ballots. Democrats have consistently characterized these arguments as nothing more than a ruse for voter suppression tactics. Brandon Richards, spokesman for California Governor Gavin Newsom, explicitly stated that this administration has made no secret of its goal to undermine free and fair elections, calling the deployment of federal forces an intimidation tactic meant to suppress voter participation.

Opinion: This is an Assault on Democracy Itself

This deployment of Justice Department monitors represents one of the most dangerous assaults on American democracy in recent memory. As a staunch supporter of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, I find this action utterly reprehensible and fundamentally anti-democratic. The timing, context, and justification for this monitoring reek of political manipulation and voter intimidation tactics that have no place in a free society. When the President of the United States uses the Department of Justice - an institution meant to uphold the rule of law impartially - as a political weapon to intimidate voters, we have crossed into dangerous territory that threatens the very foundations of our republic.

What makes this particularly egregious is the complete lack of evidence supporting the need for such aggressive monitoring. Study after study has confirmed that voter fraud is exceptionally rare in American elections, making these actions a solution in search of a problem. The real agenda here is transparent: to create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that will suppress voter turnout, particularly among communities that may already feel targeted by government overreach. This is not about election security; it’s about political manipulation and maintaining power through undemocratic means. Every American who values freedom and liberty should be outraged by this blatant attempt to undermine our electoral process and should demand that our elections remain free, fair, and accessible to all eligible voters without intimidation or interference.
