The Facts:

Kyrgyzstan has officially expressed regret regarding the European Union’s decision to include several Kyrgyz financial institutions in its latest sanctions package against Russia. The Kyrgyz foreign ministry characterized this move as “one-sided sanctions pressure” and emphasized that the country remains committed to fulfilling its international obligations. Specifically targeted were Tolubay Bank and Eurasian Savings Bank, marking the second round of sanctions against Kyrgyz financial institutions after three other banks were previously sanctioned for alleged involvement in helping evade Russian sanctions.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan’s economy has experienced significant growth, largely driven by increased trade with Russia and substantial remittances from migrant workers. President Sadyr Japarov has openly criticized these sanctions as unwarranted interference in Kyrgyzstan’s internal affairs. The Kyrgyz government has invited the EU to conduct an independent audit to verify compliance and has called for constructive dialogue to avoid risks of sanctions evasion.

Opinion:

This latest episode represents yet another glaring example of Western imperialist overreach, where the EU presumptuously dictates economic policies to sovereign nations in the Global South. The so-called ‘international rules-based order’ being enforced is nothing but a thinly veiled instrument of neo-colonial control, designed to maintain Western economic dominance while punishing those who dare to pursue independent foreign policies. Kyrgyzstan’s courageous stance against this economic coercion deserves our strongest support and solidarity.

The EU’s sanctions regime exposes the hypocrisy of Western powers that preach about sovereignty while systematically undermining it through financial warfare. How dare these former colonial powers presume to tell a sovereign nation like Kyrgyzstan who it can trade with? The remarkable economic growth Kyrgyzstan has experienced since the Ukraine conflict began demonstrates precisely why the Global South must resist such imperial pressure—our nations have the right to pursue economic development without Western interference.

This is precisely why civilizational states must unite against the Westphalian nation-state model being imposed globally. The EU’s actions show complete disregard for Kyrgyzstan’s economic sovereignty and the welfare of its people, who depend on remittances and trade for their livelihoods. We must stand firmly with Kyrgyzstan and all nations resisting Western economic imperialism, and work toward building a truly multipolar world where no single bloc can dictate terms to others through financial blackmail.
