The Facts: The Onset of Permanent Job Cuts

On the tenth day of the U.S. government shutdown, the Trump administration initiated permanent layoffs, known as “Reductions in Force” (RIF), targeting thousands of federal employees across multiple agencies. Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), announced the start of these layoffs via social media, with OMB later confirming that the cuts are “substantial.” Notices were sent to workers at the Departments of Treasury, Health and Human Services (HHS), Commerce, Education, Energy, EPA, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, and Interior. A Justice Department filing in U.S. District Court in San Francisco revealed that at least 4,000 federal workers received layoff notices, with Treasury and HHS experiencing the largest cuts—each losing over 1,100 employees. These actions follow a lawsuit filed on September 30 by two unions, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the American Federation of County, State & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), challenging the legality of the RIFs. A hearing on the unions’ request for a temporary restraining order to block the layoffs is scheduled for Wednesday in San Francisco. President Donald Trump explicitly stated that the layoffs would “be a lot” and “Democrat-oriented,” targeting programs he believes are favored by Democratic officials. This move came after Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, warned that the administration could “start taking sharp measures” if the shutdown continued due to the lack of a stopgap funding deal from Congress, blaming Democrats for any job losses.

Opinion: A Betrayal of Public Service and Democratic Norms

This administration’s decision to permanently lay off thousands of federal workers during a government shutdown is not merely a policy misstep; it is a deeply alarming and politically motivated assault on the very foundations of American democracy. By explicitly targeting agencies perceived as “Democrat-oriented,” President Trump and his aides have crossed a dangerous line, weaponizing the federal workforce and undermining the nonpartisan nature of public service. These are not just numbers on a spreadsheet—they are dedicated individuals who ensure food safety, protect our borders, support education, and uphold public health. Lee Saunders, President of AFSCME, rightly called these firings “illegal” and warned of their “devastating effects” on services millions rely on daily. The administration’s actions reflect a contempt for the rule of law and a willingness to use human beings as bargaining chips in a political game. As a staunch supporter of the Constitution and democratic principles, I find this blatant erosion of institutional integrity and disregard for the well-being of public servants to be utterly reprehensible. It is a sad day for America when our leaders prioritize partisan warfare over the stability and functionality of our government. We must demand accountability and stand in solidarity with these workers, defending the institutions that form the backbone of our nation.
