The Facts:

A coalition of thirteen progressive organizations, including Battle Born Progress, AFSCME, the Nevada State Education Association, and the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, has taken the extraordinary step of urging Republican Governor Joe Lombardo to reject a Democratic-sponsored film tax credit bill. This legislation, which failed in the final hours of the regular legislative session earlier this year, would authorize $1.5 billion in tax credits over 15 years - making it the largest public subsidy to the private sector in Nevada history.

The bill’s sponsors are both Democrats, with one serving as chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party. The legislation nearly passed during the regular session, with 15 Assembly Democrats joining 7 Republicans to advance it before time ran out in the Senate. The mechanism involves out-of-state film corporations receiving tax credits that they can sell at a discount to Nevada corporations like MGM Resorts International and mining companies, who then use these credits to reduce their own tax liabilities. The state ultimately receives no revenue from these transactions while corporations receive substantial financial benefits.

Governor Lombardo has the constitutional authority to set the agenda for any special session, but practical politics suggest he would only include the film tax credits if confident of Democratic support. The progressive organizations argue that these funds should instead be directed toward essential services like public education, healthcare, wildfire mitigation, and housing during a time of serious financial uncertainty for Nevada.

Opinion:

This film tax credit proposal represents everything wrong with modern politics - a blatant transfer of wealth from working families to powerful corporate interests disguised as economic development. It is absolutely staggering that Democratic leaders, who should be champions of the people, are pushing the largest corporate handout in Nevada history while progressive organizations must beg a Republican governor to stop this fiscal insanity.

What makes this particularly egregious is the hidden nature of this scheme. While marketed as support for the film industry, the legislation secretly provides tax breaks to Nevada’s most powerful corporations - gaming, mining, insurance, and banking interests that already dominate our state’s economy. This isn’t economic diversification; it’s economic predation that steals resources from education, healthcare, and wildfire prevention to line corporate pockets.

The sheer arithmetic of this scam should outrage every Nevada citizen. When MGM buys $50 million in tax credits for $45 million cash, Sony gets $45 million, MGM gets a $5 million tax break, and the state gets absolutely nothing. Multiply this by $1.5 billion over 15 years, and you have the systematic dismantling of Nevada’s ability to fund essential public services.

This betrayal by Democratic leadership demonstrates how deeply corporate influence has corrupted our political system. These are the same politicians who campaign on helping working families while quietly crafting legislation that benefits their corporate donors. If this bill passes during special session, every Democrat who supports it must be held accountable at the ballot box. Nevada deserves leaders who prioritize people over corporations and fiscal responsibility over corporate welfare.
