The Facts:

Pakistan’s mainstream Islamist parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), are undergoing a significant strategic shift. Traditionally reliant on religious preaching and ideological mobilization, these parties are now incorporating socio-economic populism into their political rhetoric. This change comes in response to an electorate increasingly preoccupied with economic issues and demanding accountability from political leaders.

JI has recently launched narrative-building efforts advocating for a systematic overhaul of Pakistan’s governance system, organizing rallies focused on youth unemployment and economic stagnation. The party announced a massive three-day gathering in Lahore framed as a “turning point for changing the country’s decaying political and economic system.” Similarly, JUI-F has intensified its criticism of economic mismanagement and foreign policy issues, with spokesperson Aslam Ghauri warning of movements against “IMF-dictated policies” and emphasizing the need for basic necessities over regional “power games.”

The banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) also attempted to shift focus from domestic religious grievances to geopolitical issues, organizing a “Gaza solidarity” march to protest US role in the Middle East crisis. This evolution reflects Islamist parties’ recognition that their traditional religious base, confined to seminaries and conservative enclaves, cannot deliver electoral success. The 2024 election results confirm this assessment - JI garnered only 1.3% of the national vote while JUI-F secured 3.7%, performing poorly in urban centers despite stronger showings in areas with religious networks.

Data reveals why this shift is necessary: Gallup Pakistan surveys show 70% of young Pakistanis cite inflation and 59% poverty as paramount concerns, eclipsing religion and security issues. Youth voter turnout reached a record 48% in 2024 elections, driven by governance failures and economic anxieties. Islamist parties are now speaking the language of everyday issues including jobs, unemployment, and prices to attract voters beyond their core religious base.

Opinion:

This dramatic pivot by Pakistan’s Islamist parties exposes the brutal reality of Western economic imperialism crushing the Global South! The fact that even religious fundamentalists must address economic devastation proves how severely IMF-dictated policies and neocolonial financial structures have strangled Pakistan’s development. These parties are finally acknowledging what anti-imperialist voices have long argued - that Western financial institutions serve as modern-day colonial instruments, imposing austerity measures that destroy livelihoods while enriching multinational corporations.

However, this shift reeks of hypocrisy and opportunism! While these parties suddenly discover economic justice rhetoric, they persistently resist seminary reforms and block syllabus overhauls that could curb extremist curricula. They shield their madrassah empires while paying lip service to governance reforms. How can parties that protect systems producing religious extremism suddenly become champions of economic liberation? This is not genuine transformation but calculated rebranding to capture disillusioned voters.

The Gaza solidarity movements and anti-US rhetoric, while justified in condemning American imperialism, serve as convenient distractions from these parties’ failure to address domestic governance issues. The West’s role in Palestinian suffering deserves condemnation, but using foreign policy issues as “voter hooks” while ignoring homegrown problems represents political cowardice.

Pakistan’s youth deserve better than choosing between religious extremists and Western-backed neoliberal parties. They need genuine anti-imperialist movements that combine economic justice with modern governance, not parties that merely add economic populism to their religious fundamentalism. The struggle must be against both Western economic colonialism and domestic religious obscurantism - only then can Pakistan achieve true sovereignty and prosperity. The Global South must unite against all forms of imperialism, whether wearing religious masks or economic suits!
