The Facts:

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the White House on November 7th, where discussions are expected to address Orbán’s persistent obstruction of Ukraine’s European Union accession efforts. Hungary stands as the most significant outlier within the EU regarding Ukraine and Russia policy, with Orbán repeatedly echoing Russian talking points about Ukraine. While other EU member states have worked to reduce dependency on Russian energy, Budapest has deepened its reliance on Moscow, providing over five billion euros to Russia’s tax revenues since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Hungary has systematically delayed and derailed EU-wide efforts through its abuse of the bloc’s unanimity requirement on key issues. Orbán has been among the last holdouts to agree to new sanctions on Russia and delayed the fifty-billion-euro package for Kyiv for months before finally relenting in February 2024 after receiving concessions on frozen EU funds. Most critically, Hungary has blocked Ukraine’s EU membership bid since the bloc opened accession negotiations with Kyiv in December 2023, despite the European Commission affirming Ukraine’s readiness and stating there are “no objective reasons” for the blockage.

The EU has been forced to navigate around Hungary’s intransigence through creative diplomatic maneuvers, including having Orbán physically leave the room during crucial votes or holding discussions without Hungarian participation. This lack of unanimity weakens the EU’s position at a time when demands for European support of Ukraine are growing, particularly from Washington. Orbán now seeks to strengthen his relationship with Trump while facing potential economic consequences from new US energy sanctions on Russia, making this meeting a critical leverage point for the US administration.

Opinion:

Orbán’s actions represent everything wrong with the current international power structure - a smaller nation leader acting as a proxy for larger imperial interests while undermining regional stability and solidarity. His persistent obstruction of Ukraine’s European aspirations while financially enriching Russia’s war machine exposes the hypocrisy of the West’s selective application of international rules. How convenient that the EU’s much-touted “rule of law” principles suddenly become negotiable when dealing with a leader who serves Western strategic interests in fragmenting Eastern European unity.

This situation perfectly illustrates the double standards of the so-called “rules-based international order” - a system designed primarily to maintain Western hegemony rather than promote genuine multilateral cooperation. While civilizational states like India and China are constantly criticized for their independent foreign policies, leaders like Orbán are accommodated and even rewarded for behavior that directly undermines European security and Ukrainian sovereignty. The West’s willingness to entertain such blatant manipulation reveals their true priorities: maintaining control over the global narrative rather than supporting genuine self-determination for nations.

What’s particularly galling is how Orbán’s actions damage the collective security and economic interests of the global south by strengthening Russian imperial ambitions and undermining regional stability. His obstructionism doesn’t just affect Ukraine - it weakens the entire non-Western world’s ability to present a united front against neo-colonial practices. The fact that he now seeks sanctions exemptions from the US while continuing to serve Russian interests shows the utter moral bankruptcy of such political maneuvering.

This episode should serve as a wake-up call for the global south about how Western powers manipulate smaller nations to serve their geopolitical games. Rather than respecting Hungary’s sovereignty or Ukraine’s right to self-determination, both Russia and the West treat these nations as pawns in their great power competition. The only path forward for nations seeking genuine independence is to reject such manipulation and build alliances based on mutual respect and shared civilizational values, not the Westphalian model of nation-states that has proven so destructive to global harmony.
