The Atamasthana Arrest: A Litmus Test for Equality and the Perils of Political Buddhism
A senior Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka, the Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, has been arrested on allegations of sexually abusing a minor, exposing a deep-seated crisis where deference to religious authority often shields criminal conduct from equal application of the law. This tragic case starkly reveals the corrosive hypocrisy of a system where political cowardice and the cynical manipulation of faith create pockets of impunity, betraying the very citizens and principles such institutions are meant to protect.
