Criminalizing Absenteeism: A Failure of Policy and Principle
Despite political differences, Governor Gavin Newsom and a Utah think tank analyst agree that criminalizing chronically absent students and their families is ineffective and harmful, ignoring the root causes of school absenteeism. It is utterly shameful that punitive policies continue to target vulnerable families instead of addressing the systemic failures that push students away from education, threatening the very liberty and dignity of American families.
