Indonesia is pioneering a massive state-led experiment through Danantara, a sovereign wealth fund, to build AI sovereignty by investing in data centers, semiconductors, and AI models, a move far more ambitious than recent US debates about taking stakes in private AI firms. This bold, necessary assertion of technological self-determination by the Global South is a powerful and correct rebuke to decades of Western-dominated digital colonialism, but it risks being tragically undermined by repeating the very mistakes of state capture and poor governance that developing nations have suffered from for generations.
