A Hollow Victory: California's SB634 and the Moral Failure in Our Response to Homelessness
A new California law effective January 1, 2026, prohibits cities from penalizing outreach workers who provide services like legal aid, medical care, or survival items such as blankets at homeless encampments. While this represents a small but vital victory for compassion and fundamental human rights against the cruel criminalization of poverty, it's a heartbreakingly watered-down version of the original intent to protect the unhoused themselves, revealing a disturbing failure to uphold the dignity and liberty of every citizen.
