A 28-year-old Russian laboratory worker, Darya Shipilova, died from an unknown pneumonia at a Siberian plague research facility, though health officials explicitly state her death is not linked to the plague or her work and all unverified theories are unsupported. This is a tragic personal loss, yet in a world still traumatized by COVID-19, it has been unjustly sensationalized by Western narratives to resurrect fear about the Global South's scientific capabilities and to create pretexts for neo-imperial oversight.
